In an investigation of datasets consisting of up to 2.3 million people, the researchers in this latest study discovered that individuals with better mental well-being ended up with stronger resilience, higher perceived health ratings, and a longer lifespan as they grew older.

“The research outcomes underscore the significance of incorporating mental health services into general public health strategies and research on ageing,” the authors noted in a statement.

They reckon interventions targeting improved mental well-being could be a feasible strategy to promote healthy ageing across the board.

However, the study only looked at results from people of European background, which means further research is needed to confirm these findings in other culturally diverse populations.
