After a yarn with the pilot, Ihnat dished about what he’d said: ‘Grabbing onto such key targets isn’t a cinch for a pilot, but who, if not our Ukrainian pilots, have more chops in the game when it comes to sorties with cruise missiles, eh?’

‘The guidance system led me to enemy targets, a group of eight cruise missiles heading in the right direction.

‘I see the hurdles… launched the air-to-air missiles in turn and… bang.’

Four air-to-air missiles were sent off alongside the jet’s cannon to achieve this “unthinkability”.

‘Taking out cruise missiles with cannons is a real concern due to the missiles’ high speed and the risk of them exploding,’ said the pilot.

‘But I acted just like the instructors in the States taught me, and I managed to nail them.’
