In Hong Kong, Japan’s Kei Nishikori made it to the semifinals of the Hong Kong Tennis Open on Friday. He defeated Britain’s Cameron Norrie, who is ranked 49th, in the ATP 250 tournament with a score of 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
The 35-year-old, who was previously the world’s fourth best player, now ranked 106th, is making progress, having reached the last four rounds for the first time since the Citi Open in Washington this past August 2021.
He played solid most of the time, but gave me a few opportunities,” Nishikori said on the tour’s website. “I returned more balls in the third set, played more aggressively and everything worked.
Kei Nishikori broke 4-2 in the third set to lead, landing a winner just inside the baseline after reacting well to a powerful Andy Norrie groundstroke, before breaking again to clinch the set in under 1 hour and 41 minutes.
Kei Nishikori, who will regain the world’s top 100 in the ATP rankings for the first time since June 2022 on Monday, will face China’s 50th-ranked Juncheng Shang in the finals.
