Ukraine fires US missiles, Moscow sees red and destroys eight of them

On January 4, Russian forces asserted they had intercepted eight American ATACMS (Army TACtical Missile System) missiles launched by Ukraine.

The Ukrainians launched attacks against Russian territory using American weapons, a move that represents a critical red line for Moscow, although the extent of any resulting damage or casualties is unclear. Additionally, the Russian military reports that it has intercepted 8 ATACMS missiles and 72 drones.

Several Ukrainian attacks of this type have already occurred. Vladimir Putin had pledged “a response” to each new assault, such as the launch of the Orechnik hypersonic missile. In retaliation, he threatened to target central Kiev.

While Joe Biden had authorized the use of ATACMS towards Russia by Kiev, Donald Trump, who will take office in less than a month, said he was “strongly opposed” to it.
