The second season of the survival thriller television series “Squid Game” created by Netflix garnered more than 68 million views in its first week, thereby exceeding the previous benchmark set by “Wednesday,” which had accumulated 50.1 million views.
While the initial season of “Squid Game” gained a massive following through a viral hit, its sequel has started strong. It has reached a milestone by topping the charts in 92 countries on its premiere date, a first for any Netflix series.
It has also made it the seventh most-watched non-English speaking Netflix series ever, with high expectations that it will soon lead the ranks. Concerning the most-watched Netflix series in any language, “Squid Game” season 1, released in 2021, currently holds the top position of the most-watched non-English Netflix series list with over 2.2 billion hours viewed and 265.2 million views.
Following “Stranger Things” season 4, released in 2022, which garnered 1.83 billion hours viewed and 140.7 million views, “Wednesday” season 1 takes the third spot with 1.72 billion hours viewed and 252.1 million views.
Season 2 is reaching a crucial milestone, requiring merely 30 million more views to enter the top 10 of all-time viewership rankings.
The Squid Game” revolves around a secret competition where 456 participants, all living with severe economic difficulties, risk their lives competing in a series of treacherous children’s games with a maximum prize of 45.6 billion won (approximately $31.1 million). The series gets its name from “ojingeo,” a traditional Korean children’s game also called “squid.
The second season was released on December 26, 2024, and takes place three years after the first season’s debut. Both seasons have received positive reviews from critics.
The series is planned to come to a close with a third and final season, set to be released in 2025, and production overlapped with the second season.
