Golden Globes 2025: ‘Emilia Pérez’ and ‘The Brutalist’ dominate

Hollywood’s award season began with the 82nd Golden Globe Awards. “Emilia Pérez” and “The Brutalist” were notable winners. Unanticipated winners were actresses Fernanda Torres and Demi Moore.

The start of the year was marked by the beginning of awards season as the 82nd annual Golden Globes took place on Sunday evening. In addition to the expected winners, particularly in the television categories, a few shocks were experienced as well.

“Emilia Pérez,” a Spanish-language musical about a transgender Mexican cartel leader, was chosen as the Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy. The Golden Globe for best motion picture, drama went to “The Brutalist,” a three-and-a-half-hour low-budget epic about a Hungarian-born architect who maintains a successful career in the United States.

Several successful motion pictures handle sensitive social issues.

Both films led the nominations heading into the ceremony. “Emilia Pérez” received ten nods and took four awards, with the main category being one of them. It also received awards for Best Non-English Language Film, Best Original Song, and Best Supporting Actress, which was given to Zoe Saldana.

“The Brutalist” secured seven nominations, claiming three prizes, including Best Drama. Its lead actor, Adrien Brody, received the Best Actor honor, while its director, Brady Corbet, won in the Best Director category.

The winners’ speeches as well as the jokes told by presenters and the host, comedian Nikki Glaser (the first solo female host), were mostly devoid of political commentary. However, it was noteworthy that the major winners were films addressing trans people and immigration, issues often exploited by populist politicians in several countries to garner support.

What are the signs that indicate a movie is leading in the Oscars race?

The Golden Globes, determined by international entertainment journalists who work for non-US publications, are often considered a barometer for the upcoming Academy Awards nominations, awarded to movies. The nominations for the Oscars, also known as the Academy Awards, will start on Wednesday, and the fact that many voters watched the Golden Globes on Sunday night might have an impact on their decision.

Some film actors eligible for this year’s Oscars used the Globes ceremony as a strategic opportunity to campaign for recognition. Actress Demi Moore, who won her first-ever Golden Globe for her performance in “The Substance,” a film about an aging actress who resorts to extreme measures to revive her career, remarked in her acceptance speech about the significant duration of her time in the industry and the hurdles she has successfully overcome.

Unexpected wins and shutouts

Fernanda Torres also received the top honour for best drama actress for her role in “I’m Still Here”, a drama based on a true story that took place during Brazil’s military dictatorship. The film has been well-received in its native country, although it has also faced a boycott by far-right groups.

The production had been nominated for four awards, but was ultimately recognized for outstanding cinematic and commercial success.

The series continued its sequence of awards, winning in the best limited series category, along with acting awards going to cast members Anna Sawai, Hiroyuki Sanada and Tadanobu Asano.

The performance of White as Jeremy Allen won in a single category, but earned nominations in five others.
