Explore Ouarzazate’s souks

Wander through the traditional markets of Ouarzazate with the aroma of spices and slow-cooking meals filling the air.

The local marketplaces are always filled with both locals and tourists. The Sunday market in the industrial area draws the largest crowds. Here, negotiating prices is an art, and a smile can be just as valuable as cash. The stalls are overflowing with high-quality goods, such as Berber carpets handmade by artisans in the foothills of the Jbel Sirwa mountain, aromatic spices, and intricately crafted pottery. Take the time to carefully select and appreciate the plush softness of the carpets and the finely polished finish of the ceramics. Wander around the market to soak up the cozy and welcoming atmosphere where engaging with a vendor can often lead to a friendly chat over a refreshing cup of mint tea.

When dining at Ouarzazate’s souks, make sure not to eat beforehand in order to fully appreciate the variety of street food. Expect to find an array of dishes such as steaming tagines and fragrant couscous, as well as pastries infused with honey or almond, exemplified by the traditional gazelle horns.
